Report: Public Employers Ignore Minimum Wage Law

LONDON,
ENGLAND--Many charities and public entities in the United Kingdom are failing
to follow the national minimum wage law when it comes to workers with learning
disabilities, a working group has found.
In a brief story published Wednesday, the WorkPlace Law Network cited a
report by the Low Pay Commission, which said it wanted to make sure volunteer
organizations, local government authorities, universities, colleges, regional
development groups, and health and regulatory agencies stop avoiding paying
people what is required under the law.
The report noted that workers with learning disabilities, referred to in
the U.S. as "intellectual disabilities", continue to be vulnerable to
exploitation.
The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 will require public sector
employers -- including police and the central government -- to promote equality
of workers with disabilities, the report noted.
